Dyslexia Awareness in Schools

Dyslexia affects 20% of our student population. It adversely affects these students' ability to read, write, and spell. Schools do not provide research proven remediation. Schools are scarcely aware the problem exists. Attempts to raise awareness about dyslexia in the school community have thus far proven futile. Said one administrator, "It's not on our agenda."

Hi, Melissa. It's nice to see a blog on dyslexia by a professional. I agree with the apathetic attitude that many schools seem to have about dyslexia. In research about the issue for my oldest son, who is severely dyslexic, I found that only five states require some sort of prescreening in elementary school for reading disabilities. I always wonder why we wait to spend money until these children fail out of school, enter low paying jobs or go to jail. Statistically, low reading levels have a direct correlation to poverty and a life of crime, yet we continue to disregard our role in this vicious cycle. If we spent the money up front, we would have far more productive members of society who actually reach their potential rather than being shot down by those who claim to have their best interests at heart. But that's my soap box issue. When you figure out how to make schools understand the lost potential in these children, let me know. I'll be more than happy to help spread the word.

I am a mother of a dyslexic boy that I have been asking questions to the school since kindergarten! Now I finally know how to help this smart kid. I am so determined to help educate as many people at the schools as I can. I am determined to set up a parent night and get people to come as well as teachers and teach them Everything! I hope to eventually help change the Minnesota state laws on this. There is too many children failing just because their brain is a little different. These are great kids that have high potential to grow up to be wonderfull adults. I am now considering changing my degree that I have been working on. I have to see how I can change the school systems to help Dyslexics EARLY!
